William Reed, AIA, LEED, Hon FIGP -- Keynote Speaker

An internationally recognized proponent and practitioner in sustainability and regeneration Bill is a principal in two firms, the Integrative Design Collaborative and Regenesis, Inc., – green building consulting, living system design, and education organizations working to lift building and community planning into full integration and co-evolution with living systems. His work centers on creating the framework for and managing an integrative, whole-systems design process. The objective: to improve the overall quality of the physical, social and spiritual life of our living places and therefore the planet.
Bill is a planning consultant, design process facilitator, lecturer, and author. He has participated in 300 plus presentations and workshops relating to Sustainable, Regenerative and Whole System Design. He has consulted on over two hundred green design commissions and dozens of LEED projects - achieving many certifications – the majority Gold and Platinum. He is a guest lecturer at Universities from Harvard and MIT to the University of British Columbia. His clients range from New York City Department of Design and Construction, U.S. General Services Administration, Loreto Bay, Baja, Mexico, Sidwell Friends School, US Green Building Council, Genzyme Corporation, Teknion, LLC, the Willow School, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, various city planning agencies on the East and West coast, and many private development companies in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

R. CHRISTOPHER MATHIS
Building Science Lessons from the Honey Bee
90 million years of evolution and building science are embodied in the work and structures of the honey bee. From temperature management, thermal storage, indoor air quality, active and passive ventilation techniques and energy efficiency, the honey bee has developed a highly efficient construction system to support its biological needs. Attendees will be challenged to consider how we might employ these time-tested building science lessons into today’s architecture and engineering practice, as well as challenging our current definitions of “sustainability”.
R. Christopher “Chris” Mathis has spent the past 30 years focusing on how buildings and building products perform – from energy efficiency to code compliance to sustainability and long-term performance durability. He has written numerous builder, architect and consumer-targeted articles and guides on building and product performance issues. He has served as a Scientist in the Insulation Technology Laboratory at the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technical Center, was the Director of the Thermal Testing Laboratory for the National Association of Home Builders Research Center, and Director of Marketing for Architectural Testing, Inc., a private laboratory specializing in the performance of buildings and building products.
